With the end of February comes the conclusion of many fun"I love to read" activities this month. We had 3 winners for the "We Read Everywhere" bingo sheets! Congratulations go to Ritika, Sarah Sl. and Nolan! We also had the pleasure of two guest readers this week, Mrs. Zimmerman and Ms. Plexman (our library technician ...and published author!). A big thank you goes out to them for sharing their time and talent with us.
So here's what we've been up to and what is coming up...
LANGUAGE ARTS:
We had our second T.U.S.C. meeting this week and you can see the students improving and "getting the hang of it" already! Remember to be prepared ahead of time as we have two meetings next week on Monday AND Wednesday.
Our first literature circle meeting for the halfway point in our Hero novels was on Tuesday. The students were very excited to share and now they are anxious to finish their novels for our last literature circle discussions on TUESDAY, MARCH 3RD along with 2 more responses. On Monday, they will be introduced to their final lit.circle project!! Thank you to our parent volunteers who were able to join us for our second round of Literature Circles this year.
Along with T.U.S.C. and Literature Circles this week, we have been reflecting on our classroom targets in preparation for Tri-Conferences next week. In Language Arts, we have been focussing on our targets surrounding writing organized paragraphs and our personal responding skills.
MATHEMATICS:
Our Fraction Fun began this week as we created our very own Fraction Strip posters to compare the values of fractions. What size piece of a chocolate bar would you want, 1/3 or 1/10? (Check the sidebar of our blog to see our colorful fraction posters.)
We covered the basic concept of fractions by representing them with pictures and identifying the numerator and denominator of a proper fraction.
This week we also began a new "warm-up" Math program called "MATH MINUTES". At the beginning of each Math class, the students do 10 questions that range from easy review questions to new math concepts that are above grade level outcomes (fun and challenging!). We've only done 2 "minutes" so far but the students seem to enjoy the variation!
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We only managed to squeeze in one Social Studies period this week but it was a great opportunity to review what we've learned so far about early explorers!
SCIENCE:
I think the Science experiment that will be most remembered this week is our "Ice cream in a baggie"! There's nothing like -30 degree Celsius weather to inspire a class to make ice cream, a great example of a physical change as the milk changed states from a liquid to a "solid". It was a yummy hit! Be prepared...I think some students will be going home ready to make their own this weekend. Next week, we will be reviewing what we've learned about Physical Properties and Changes as there will be a test on Tuesday, March 10th.
OTHER:
- Tri-Conferences are next week, Tuesday and Thursday evening and Friday morning! I look forward to sharing your child's successes and future goals for grade 5.
- The Scholastic Book Fair returns to Linden Meadows next week also. 5E will be visiting the fair on Tuesday, Mar.3rd where the students may "window shop" to purchase things later during conference time OR they may buy the books on Tuesday afternoon as well.
- Your P.A.D. cheques should be in your child's agenda, please check to see that registration fee has been reimbursed.
- Our "P.A.D. Pity Party" was a hit! We watched the Disney movie "Sky High" which ties into our unit on Heroes...an action packed (yet relaxing) afternoon show!
Stay cozy and warm this weekend...and start thinking "spring thoughts" to help raise those temperatures! See you next week!
Mrs. Eby
