STAY HEALTHY, 5E!! YOU ROCK!

Believe it or not...it's been an incredibly rough week for me! I haven't been this sick in a long time! My head is still dizzy and my throat is very hoarse but I am so proud of 5E as I heard they pulled together for a terrific Project Love assembly as they proudly showcased their "ABC's of Project Love" Voicethread on Thursday. I have embedded the Voicethread in our blog if you wish to take a moment to watch it! They did an amazing job!
I can't wait to get back into the classroom on Monday for our Red Carpet Hero Ceremony that I needed to postpone on Thursday due to my absence. With the assistance of Mrs. Cotton's wonderful e-mails and picture taking, I am posting this week's blog (as best as I can!).

So here's what we've been up to and what is coming up:

LANGUAGE ARTS:
As you know, we've been preparing for our Red Carpet Hero Ceremony this week. We will definitely have our big ceremony on Monday so remember to "dress up" if you're feeling like getting in the spirit of a true "red carpet" experience. Along with our hero speeches, the students have been working on our Project Love campaign for 2009 by preparing the following Voicethread presentation that took place at the school wide assembly on Thursday.

With our Hero unit finally complete, we are going to be starting our "Writer's Workshop" unit! The students will be immersed in several different writing opportunities and experiences. I call this our "Chicken Soup" unit as the students will be learning how to write amazing personal narratives much like those found in a Chicken Soup book. As you can probably guess, at the end of our unit, the students will be publishing their very own Chicken Soup novels!

Next week's T.U.S.C. meetings are Tuesday and Friday!

MATHEMATICS:

This week the students continued to review and practice equivalent fractions. Along with working in their Math duotangs, the students worked in groups to create "Equivalent Fraction" posters to collaborate their understanding of the concept and display a pictoral representation of "equivalent fractions". Next week we will begin looking at comparing the values of fractions!

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We had a productive week of Social Studies this week as the students researched the 5 main explorers that were key in the discovery and eventual colonization of Canada. They studied the three C's (Cabot, Cartier and Champlain) that explored Canada via the St. Lawerance river while Henry Hudson and Martin Frobisher tackled the Northwest Passage as a means to finding the "shortcut" to India and the spice trade. The students worked in groups to research ONE explorer and created an "Identity Card" covering the 5W's about that explorer's life.
Next week, the students will be sharing their "discoveries" and pooling their knowledge to compare the different impact each explorer made on Canadian history.

SCIENCE:
It was the big science test this week! I know everyone was anxiously awaiting their marks. I will have them in their "hot little hands" by Monday! The students viewed a video this week that summarized what we've learned about Physical Changes and introduced our new concept of Chemical Changes that we will begin next week.

OTHER:
  • It was Super Lunch on Thursday! Thank you to our parent volunteers who assisted with supervision and delivery. Your help is greatly appreciated!
  • Library is on MONDAY! Don't forget those books!
  • It's Loonie week starting Tuesday...a loonie to wear green in support of the Rainbow Society, a raffle ticket and a chance to win prizes!
  • Friday's loonie day allows you to wear your sunglasses for the day in support of Project Love and we will also be making our kits on that day!
  • 2 more weeks to Spring Break...the countdown is on!

Everyone take care, stay healthy...I've missed you! See you Monday!

Mrs. Eby
