FIELD TRIP FRENZY IS FINISHED!!

It's been a whirlwind of field trips and special school events! I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter long weekend! We had a cool, blustery walk this afternoon as we completed our goal for the Walk-a-thon fundraiser. I haven't heard the totals yet but I believe the school community has raised enough money for at least 3 or 4 SMARTboards. Thank you sooo much for supporting our 21st century learners!

With all the events outside of school over the past two weeks, the students have proven their maturity and LM spirit by behaving as responsible, respectful youth. I was very proud to be their teacher! Although this has meant time away from our routine core curriculum outcomes, the activities outside of the classroom have certainly provided enriching and rewarding learning experiences to support the growth of a well-rounded student.

So here's what we've been up to and what is coming up:

LANGUAGE ARTS:

It's been another week of quick writes but it's coming down to "crunch time"! I've asked the students to select 4 of their personal narratives to FINISH writing this weekend, adding adjectives, similes and ensuring that they are long enough to convey their story idea effectively. Next week we will begin the revising process and hopefullly start designing our Chicken Soup jacket covers!
Next week we have two T.U.S.C. meetings and I've presented a challenge for the students to add a piece of "technology" into their speech for Monday. We're calling it "TECHNO TUSC!". The students were given time in the computer lab on Friday but we ran into some technical difficulties. I've asked the students to work on them over the weekend and save them on their USB drives so they may be transfered into their student accounts on Monday!
Get out your calendars, folks...it's time to announce our OPEN HOUSE T.U.S.C. meeting date, where you, the parents, are invited to see what all the "commotion" is about...FRIDAY, MAY 1ST at 1:05 pm. A formal invitation will be making its way home next week but I thought an earlier announcement would provide more time to make "work arrangements". Hope to see you there!

MATHEMATICS:

We are coming close to the end of our Fraction unit. Next week we will be looking at converting fractions into decimals and vice versa, using the denominators of 10ths, 100ths and 1000ths! As you can guess, with the end of a unit comes a final assessment. Our final test on Fractions will be Tuesday, April 28th! We will be reviewing our fraction learning with a study guide and some fun learning centers near the end of next week.

SCIENCE:

This week we have been "examining eggs" and their chemical reaction to vinegar! Thank you so much for the quick response to empty glass jars on Tuesday, we successfully received more than enough and were able to begin our investigation. The students studied the physical properties of the eggs before they "plopped" them into the vinegar and have been making daily observations of the changes taking place (check out the eggs' before and after pictures on the blog)!

OTHER:

  • Once again, thank you to our parent volunteers for our "second last" super lunch of the year!

  • BOOK ORDERS are due for Tuesday, April 21st!

  • Tri-conferences are coming up again in 3 short weeks...please fill in your preferred appointment time and return it as soon as possible as there is only ONE evening and a full day Friday for this term!

  • 5E took the V-8 Challenge Friday after our Walkathon! Do you know what 8 vegetables make up this super healthy drink?

Have a fabulous weekend! As you dust off your bikes, scooters and rollerblades, remember to play safe and WEAR YOUR HELMETS!

Love ya,

Mrs. Eby
